How Do You Create Content for Voice Search?
Most Businesses Are Optimizing for the Wrong Thing.
A florist wants to be the answer when someone says, “Hey Siri, find a florist near me.” The instinct almost everyone reaches for first is a keyword swap: take the short phrase you’d type into Google, “florist,” and stretch it into something that sounds spoken, “best florist near me for same-day delivery.” That instinct is understandable, and it’s also why most voice search efforts go nowhere.
Why the keyword-swap approach fails
Voice assistants work differently from a text search results page. When someone asks Siri or Alexa a question out loud, the assistant reads back one answer instead of a page of ten blue links, and that changes what gets rewarded. A page stuffed with a longer, conversational-sounding keyword phrase can sound spoken without ever functioning as a direct answer, and an assistant pulling from a featured snippet needs something extractable to work with. Phrasing alone gives it nothing to grab.
The common approach also treats voice search as one more item on a generic SEO checklist: get some reviews, speed up the site, make sure the business listing is accurate. Every one of those things matters, and none of them determines whether a voice assistant reads your business’s answer instead of a competitor’s. They’re the foundation the strategy sits on. Businesses that stop there end up technically compliant and still invisible to voice search, because nothing on the page is structured to be read aloud as a direct answer.
A repeatable framework
Start from real questions, not guessed phrases.
Instead of imagining how a “conversational” keyword might sound, pull the actual questions people ask around a topic. A quick pass through a tool like AnswerThePublic or the query data in Google Search Console usually turns up specific, real phrasings, often narrower and stranger than anything you’d invent by trying to sound natural on purpose.
Answer first, explain second.
Give the direct answer in the first sentence, then follow with details. “Do tomatoes need full sun? Yes, they need six to eight hours of direct sunlight a day to grow well,” gives a voice assistant something to read aloud immediately. A paragraph that opens with backstory and works its way toward an answer three sentences later gives it nothing to grab.
Mark up the answer so machines can find it.
Structured data, schema for FAQs, how-to content, or business details tell a search engine exactly what part of the page is the question and what part is the answer. Without it, a system has to guess at the structure a human reader would find obvious at a glance.
Build the technical floor underneath it.
Accurate business listings, a fast mobile site, and consistent name-address-phone details across platforms don’t win a voice search result on their own, but they’re what keep a genuinely good answer from getting disqualified before it’s ever considered. Skipping this step undoes everything else.
A realistic example
Go back to the florist. The keyword-swap version of their site might have a page titled “Best Florist Near Me for Same-Day Delivery in Bernal Heights,” stuffed with that phrase a few extra times. It reads like copy written for a machine rather than a person, and it still never actually answers anything a voice assistant could read aloud.
Run it through the framework instead. A quick look at real question data turns up something more specific than the florist would have guessed: “Does [neighborhood] have a florist that delivers same day?” The page gets restructured around that exact question, opening with a direct answer: “Yes. [Florist name] delivers same-day within Bernal Heights for orders placed before 2pm.” FAQ schema explicitly marks the question and answer. The business listing across Google, Yelp, and the florist’s own site all show matching hours and delivery details. None of this guarantees the assistant will pick this florist over every competitor, but it gives the page a real shot, something the keyword-stuffed version never had.
The limitation worth naming
Structured data and featured-snippet optimization require a level of technical setup that most independent local business owners don’t have on hand and can’t easily learn overnight. A regional or national chain with an in-house marketing or dev team can implement schema markup across hundreds of location pages in a coordinated push. A single-location shop owner is often left choosing between paying a specialist or muddling through documentation on their own, if they attempt it at all.
That gap matters more for voice search than it did for traditional search. A results page can show 10 links, giving a smaller or newer business a chance to be seen even without perfect technical execution. A voice assistant typically reads a single answer, and that single-answer format concentrates visibility on whichever business already has the technical resources and established review history to win that slot. A business without those resources isn’t competing for a smaller slice of the traffic. It’s largely shut out of it.
One next action
Pull up your Google Search Console query report and look for anything phrased as a full question, not a fragment. Pick the single most common one, and rewrite the page it’s landing on so the very first sentence answers that exact question directly. That one change, done well on one page, teaches you more about voice search than any general checklist will.
