Arguably, millennials are a little indifferent to privacy and data security breaches. Initially, the researchers set out to survey respondents aged 16-35 years, believing that millennials were oblivious of privacy concerns. This opinion, however, changed after 80% of the 2,000 respondents stated that information regarding medical, financial, and personal data was critical and could only be accessed by authorized persons like government and financial institutions. The respondents were, however, less concerned about how social media data, location data, and purchasing references were used.

 

The respondents were also less willing to provide data to enjoy the better retail experience and other benefits. According to the survey, only 40% of the respondents would offer location data to get targeted goods, and another 40% would be willing to share a summary of their shopping habits in exchange for free services. Usually, retailers use location data to track travel patterns and targeting for marketing solicitations. Additionally, such data is easily accessible to hackers, allowing malicious people to find out where the individual lives. Instead of providing location data in a bid to receive reminders from different apps, it is safer to give a street address. The respondents also stated that the institutions they trust most with information, including the government and the least trusted are dating sites and social media platforms.

To begin with, millennials are the generation that has grown around apps, smartphones, the internet, computers, and the specific risks associated with privacy posed by such technologies. As a result, they tend to have a lower expectation of the security of information. During the survey performed by Atomik Research and Intercede management firm, 23% of the respondents expressed a level of helplessness over the situation. They believed that corporations would access private information, whether they provided it or not. The increasing use of online platforms makes information and accessible increasingly available by corporations.

Prioritizing Cloud Over In-house Security

Another factor that makes this generation susceptible to privacy concerns is the trend to prioritize cloud security over in-house security. Instead of creating security checks on their work networks and personal gadgets, millennials prefer working with cloud vendors.
