Skills Required for Becoming an Affiliate Marketer

Affiliate marketing is still one of the most profitable ways to make money online. It is because earning potential is huge, and you can make thousands of dollars from the comfort of your home.

Everybody from all walks wants to make money online through affiliate marketing. However, making money with affiliate marketing is not as easy as it may sound. Every 9 out of 10 affiliate marketers fails to earn even a penny and eventually quits.

Speaking bluntly, if you want to become an affiliate marketer, then don’t live under the impression that affiliate marketing will make you rich overnight. It will be a long haul and will take a beginner to generate money for years. But once you get going, there is no looking back.

I want to tell everyone there; that before taking a plunge into affiliate marketing, ensure you have the following skills. Or be prepared to acquire these skills.

  1. Patience, Discipline & Determination

I started selling online in the year 2008. I was very new to affiliate marketing back then. I thought within a few weeks; I would begin raking thousands of dollars every month. But it didn’t happen. It took 6 six months to generate my first sale. I was selling downloadable products like eBooks and software.

Most newcomers become excited about starting something new, but when it comes down to the actual process, they give up simply because they are impatient! During the course, you must learn myriads from content creation to marketing and data analysis.

Generating sales is going to take a lot of time than you imagined before taking the plunge. Of course, it would help if you were disciplined and determined throughout the learning process, especially in the initial stages. So come prepared for hard work.

  1. Basic Technical Skills

I had a tough time while creating and running my first ever website. Unfortunately, budding affiliate marketers are expected to know the basics of website designing and coding.

Although today CMS (Content Management Services) like WordPress allows you to create a website by offering easy drag and drop templates, you still have to learn about HTML to understand tags to format your website.

Learning domain & hosting is going to take a lot of time. First, you must choose a host according to the amount of data on your site, security, and privacy protection to save your site from spammers and hackers.

You also have to learn some photoshop for creating and editing images. Photoshop will help you immensely while creating powerful landing pages. If you have any problems while creating your first website, you can ask for help on Fiverr. Freelancers over there can fix your website for a nominal fee.

Brush up your technical skills!

  1. Researching and Data Analysis

An affiliate marketer has to do a lot of research and data analysis. They have to start from scratch.

The first step is finding the most appropriate niche. A niche that is close to your heart and very easy to promote. Today competition is very tough, and to beat it; you have to get your niche right. Learn more about your product.

You have to research the marketplace. Learn more about your audience and their needs, customer demographics like age, gender, income, etc. This will help you to chalk out a strategy and an action plan.

Then comes the data analysis. Marketers must analyze data like traffic source, quality of traffic, which ads campaigns are converting better, conversion rates, desktop users or mobile users, etc.

You have to see a lot of graphs and charts. By now, it is quite clear that proper research and data analysis will differentiate a successful affiliate marketer from an unsuccessful one.

  1. Free & Paid Marketing Skills

Every affiliate marketer has to learn free and paid marketing skills alike. Unfortunately, new affiliate marketers with a limited budget have no option other than free marketing.

They have to rely on content marketing. And the best way to master content marketing is by creating great content like writing blog posts, videos, infographics, etc. You can use social media platforms to amplify your marketing efforts. Free marketing takes time to give any results, but it is free.

However, paid marketing like Google Ads and Facebook ads come with a great cost. You will get traffic overnight but have to pay a fee. So first, hone your free marketing skills, and then think about paid marketing.

  1. Persuasive Sales Skill

This is an essential skill you will learn as an affiliate marketer. But, unfortunately, how to persuade your visitors to buy products will take years. It is an art!

Just having a good product is not enough. You must tell your visitors how your product can solve their problems and make them happy. You have to address all their anxieties and insecurities.

If customers are convinced after reading your sales page, they may buy your product. But for creating a powerful and persuasive sales page, you must learn copywriting. Copywriting is an art, and you must learn it from the marketing gurus in the industry.

A committed affiliate marketer must be willing to devote time to learning copywriting skills.

  1. Creativity and Ingenuity – Content Creation

Content is King! You have to create quality content regularly. Just blog posts aren’t enough. You need more engaging content, like making videos and podcasts to connect with your audiences.

Today 80% of marketers use videos to reach out to their followers. Therefore to stay ahead of the competition, you must create videos. After Google, the second most common website is YouTube.

However, video content is slightly different than written content like blogs & articles. It requires creativity and your willingness to come onto the camera.

Start honing this skill very early on!

  1. Knowledge of Search Engines, Especially Google

These days you cannot survive affiliate marketing without learning search engines. So if you want to sell products online, you got to know all kinds of search engines Google, YouTube, Amazon, etc.

You must learn how they behave, their algorithm works, any search engine updates, etc.

Most of the free organic traffic is going to come from search engines. There are tons of neat little tricks that you can learn. But try learning basics like keywords, meta description, tags, anchor texts, backlinks, etc.

SEO or search engine optimization is a technical skill, but you must acquire it.

  1. People Skills

Last but not least is people’s skills like getting along with other affiliate marketers. You may require help from other experienced and established marketers in the industry. You may also need help from technical experts to resolve website design and coding issues.

In this line, you will need help from various people. So you have to develop a great rapport with them. So getting along with everybody is one of the most influential skills.

You will need the eight most important skills to become an affiliate marketer.

If you are considering becoming an affiliate marketer, don’t take the plunge before acquiring these skills. Or try to acquire each once you kick start your affiliate marketing journey.
