How to Get ITIL® Certified

It is important to note that a credit system is used by ITIL for all levels, wherein the candidate has to earn several credits for each level. Therefore, a total of 22 credits is required to achieve the ITIL expert certification.

How to Get ITIL® Certified?

To gain the ITIL certification, there are a few steps that a candidate must follow. So, let us have a look at them! 

  • Step 1 – Enroll in a Training Program 

The first step is enrolling in ITIL training online or offline program. There are a lot of training institutes that provide you with the ITIL course. The training will help the candidates gain in-depth knowledge of how the ITIL® framework works and how it can be employed in businesses/ companies. Next, candidates are advised to complete the V4 certification training and sit for the exam.

  • Step 2 – Take the Exam

Once you have gained knowledge regarding the techniques and methodologies of the ITIL® framework, the next step is to take the exam. The exam will be challenging, so ensure you have ample knowledge to excel. 

  • Step 3 – Scoring 

How can we forget the scoring? To pass the exam and gain certification, a candidate must score at least 65% marks in the exam. This means that out of 40 questions, a candidate must get 26 correct answers. 

So, this is how you can gain the ITIL® certification. First, ensure that you score good marks in the examination! For now, let us now discuss the five levels of the ITIL® certification, which you should understand to plan and acquire these certifications.

Levels of ITIL® Certification   

There are five levels of ITIL® certification. Candidates must begin from gaining the foundation certification to the Expert level certification. Let us discuss these levels in detail. 

  • ITIL® Foundation Certification

The ITIL® foundation certification teaches the fundamentals of ITIL. Candidates who are new to ITIL can begin from this level. This certification level has no prerequisites, and any candidate interested in the ITIL® framework can give the examination. To complete the foundation certification, enrolling in a practice course is unnecessary. 

The exam comprises 40 MCQs; the candidate must score at least 60% to gain the certification. 

  • ITIL® Practitioner Level 

The ITIL® Practitioner certification was recently introduced in the ITIL course. The exam came into existence in 2016 and provided candidates with practical knowledge of ITIL® practices, processes, and principles. A practitioner can easily use this framework to fulfill a business’s long-term and short-term goals. For example, an individual taking this course level focuses on organizational management changes, communications, and metrics. 

Candidates who take up this second level of ITIL certification can adapt, adopt, and apply the concepts of ITIL in an organization. Candidates can prepare for this certification level by self-studying or enrolling in an ITIL training program. The exam consists of 40 MCQsand a candidate must score 65% – 70% marks to gain the certification. 

  • ITIL® Intermediate Level

The ITIL Intermediate certification is module-based. Each module is based on different aspects of the management of IT services. The modules are segregated as service lifecycles. Here are the modules: 

    • Service Strategy
    • Service Design
    • Service Transition
    • Service Transition
    • Service Operation
    • Continual Service Improvement 

To gain this level of certification, it is recommended that the candidates must have at least two years of working experience after giving the practitioner exam. Then, candidates can either do self-study or enroll in a certification course to give the intermediate exam. 

  • ITIL® Expert Level 

ITIL Expert is the advanced certification encompassing the length and breadth of ITIL principles, practices, and processes. Therefore, gaining the ITIL® Expert level certification is essential before going for the  ITIL® Master certification. 

To qualify for the ITIL® Expert certification level, candidates must obtain at least 17 credits from all the other levels. 

  • ITIL® Master Level

ITIL® Master certification is a pinnacle that signifies the ability of the candidate to apply the ITIL® framework in real-world situations. The ITIL® Master certification encompasses all the candidates have learned in the expert level certification. An ITIL master has complete mastery over the ITIL processes by completing the following things. Have a look! 

    • Achieving the ITIL® Expert Certification  
    • I am completing at least five years of ITIL® Experience in a finance or management company.
    • I am submitting a proposal for service management.
    • I am completing an interview with the ITIL assessment panel.

The ITIL® certifications cost about 30,000/- to 32,000/-. Given the expense of the certification and the requirements, candidates who wish to gain the certification must pursue it. That being said, earning the ITIL® certification signifies that a candidate is well-versed in the ITIL® framework, processes, principles, etc.
