Understanding Accessibility and Custom Fonts

Before you use a custom font in your article, be in mind that screen readers don’t always understand them, which can cause accessibility issues for some people.

If you choose to use a custom Unicode font (including emojis) in your post, consider including some of the following features to ensure that it is completely accessible to all users while preserving your style and aesthetic:

  • Make sure your photos include alt text.
  • To help screen readers to transmit information, add closed captioning (CC) to your Instagram Stories using one of Instagram’s in-app fonts.
  • Consider adding a plain font caption here or in your first comment if you’re only using Unicode fonts in your caption.

When writing your posts, keep this in mind and strive to be as inclusive as possible. More information on making your Instagram account more accessible may be found here.

How to Add Fancy Instagram Fonts to Instagram Stories

Unlike the rest of Instagram, Instagram Stories has a variety of fonts to choose from.

However, even with these various options, there isn’t much room to create a truly branded experience on Instagram Stories.

There are three primary methods for adding custom fonts to your Instagram Stories:

1: Use a Graphic Design App

If you’re new to Instagram Stories design, there are plenty of simple creative apps to get you started.

Over and Canva are excellent choices for creating custom Instagram Stories for your business. Both apps provide a large selection of fonts and the option to upload a custom font.

We used Over in this example to add text to a stock image from our camera roll.

To replicate this, choose a video or image from your camera roll and set the size to Story:

Then, tap the Text icon and type in your desired text. Scroll across to choose a font, or click Get More to access Over’s font library.

Navigate from the Library to the Custom tab and click Add Fonts to add a custom font.

You can upload a custom font into Over from here to use in future designs!

TIP: Copy and paste text overlays into your Instagram Stories to save time! To write a line of text on a transparent background, use a design app like Over. Then, save the image to your camera roll, copy it, paste it into your Instagram Stories using the Text tool, and hold the screen for 2-3 seconds until the Paste button appears.

This copy and paste hack can also add text from a font generator tool!
