Amazon Sales Rank makes Amazon and all 3rd party sellers tick. It’s the lifeblood of doing business on Amazon. For huge sellers, large sums of money can be made or lost with the fluctuation of Sales Rank (similar to the stock market)

The Amazon Sales Rank is an actual number that captures an item’s popularity in a specific category, all products that are part of a category have a sales rank. The Sales Rank interval can be as small as one or an infinitely high number based on other items in that category. A higher number means you are probably not seeing large sales numbers; a smaller number means you probably see good, if not amazing, sales volume. Sales Rank tells us the period of time since an item was last sold. For a better sales rank, you want a high velocity of sales. 1 per minute? 1 per day? It depends on what you are selling compared to others selling the same item or in the same category. Although Amazon does not come right out and share sales numbers, they publicly display product rank, which allows us to estimate sales.

There are two main ways to find a Product Best Sellers Rank, aka Sales Rank. First, you can manually search for it on Amazon. Or you can use one of many available 3rd party tools.

Where to find Amazon’s Best Sellers Rank on Amazon

It makes a lot of sense once you see it. The best-selling product in each category (BSR) generally sells the most. The second best-selling product sells a little less. Amazon’s algorithm calculates Best Sellers Rank (BSR) by comparing the number of times a specific product is ordered to how many times all other products are ordered in the same category.

A product’s BSR can be found on the seller central app or the product detail page. To find the BSR of any product, visit the product page for a particular ASIN on Amazon.com and scroll down to the “Product Details Section.” Here you will see in bold “Amazon Best Sellers Rank” for the product you are viewing along with its rank in related subcategories. There are more than 60K subcategories on Amazon.

3rd Party Tools that help you estimate sales volume

As we know, Amazon does not release any information on Sales Volume, so any 3rd party tools that provide sales estimates are very rough estimates. Here is how they work. First, they track multiple products (with different sales ranks in other categories) and add them together in a basket to see the current “in stock” quantity. Then, based on the daily change, they can estimate how many items have been sold during that day. Then they match the sales with the Sales Rank and category. Do the same on millions of products, and you have enough data to estimate any category and any sales rank. Of course, it’s not possible to track all the products and all the sales ranks, so have you fill in the gaps. Here are a few tools that do this job for us you may want to try.

Jungle Scout

The Jungle Scout sales estimator is free to use and accessed from its website. Bear in mind these numbers are just estimates, though, and should only be used in that context. This number is based on the sales rank of a category, not a specific product. The free version on their website shows you how many estimated units are sold. If you buy the paid version, you see the number of sellers; the number of reviews will allow you to narrow down by choosing specific categories to focus on. A full jungle scout subscription starts at $39 a month. This gives you access to the chrome extension, giving you more specific numbers based on keyword searches on Amazon.

AZMScout

AMZ Scout has a similar service and uses Sales Rank to estimate a product’s sales volume. Like other options, you need to know a product’s ranking to estimate sales to make this work. A free version on the AMZ Scout website gives you estimated sales based on a category ranking number. They also have a chrome toolbar that gives you more detailed information like sales estimates in dollars, number of reviews and competitors, etc. The chrome extension is available for a one-time lifetime pricing of $199. You can also select an annual plan for $99 or a monthly plan for $44.99 per month.

ProfitGuru

Lastly, ProfitGuru. ProfitGuru is different from other free tools because estimates are done per ASIN. You can access the free tool from their website at https://www.profitguru.com/calculator/sales. Just paste an ASIN to view Sales Rank. The tool will estimate sales for that specific ASIN based on the Current, 7-day average, and 30-day average Sales Rank. ProfitGuru also provides historical charts of how the Sales rank changed and the price and number of sellers’ history. Click the link above and drop in your favorite ASIN to check it out.

So the next time you are looking to estimate sales during product research, you can manually do it the old-fashioned way by visiting Amazon.com or using one of the above services. Start with the free estimators, and then if you are encouraged, it might be worth purchasing a subscription to dig deeper. Happy hunting!
