Access to Work Experience Opportunities for Young People is Integral to the Economy Post-Pandemic

A top organization, Speakers for Schools, commissioned three YouGov surveys comprising 2,000 young people in the UK and 100 MPs and 100 business leaders to determine the current situation bothering young professionals and what the government and employers think. Do Young Professionals Think VWEX Can Restore Their Confidence?

The pandemic hit young people harder than expected. To most young people, the lockdown could mean a longer resting period. Still, in reality, it is a disruption and delays to their professional progress and the main contributor to mental issues. Nonetheless, access to work experience remains a priority since it defines their career or professional future and helps them overcome the mental issues that they are struggling with. 

53-63% of surveyed young people think receiving work experience in their field of choice can improve their confidence to be better set for the labor market.

Considering this priority, about 47-55% of young people see it as a barrier to their professional future because they do not have access to work experience opportunities. Since young people greatly prioritize work experience, employers and the government are rethinking ways to get UK youngsters back in learning, which drives home the importance of Virtual Work Experience (VWEX).

Young Professionals Do Not Think Employers and Professionals Understand Them Enough

More than 90% of employers and government representatives agree that the pandemic has significantly impacted young people. A better percentage of surveyed employers and government representatives view the COVID impact on young people as significant.

  • 67% of 100 employers surveyed think they understand the hopes, needs, and aspirations of young professionals. However, looking at the numbers, only 23% of young people accept that employers understand their hopes, needs, and aspirations enough. 
  • The disparity could well be traced to 66% of employers compile data about young people from their relationships with family and friends. This restricts employers from gaining a deeper insight into what young people experience in society.
  • The governments also think they know much about young people. The survey shows 87% of politicians believe they understand young people’s needs, hopes, and aspirations. But, unfortunately, only 11% of young people accept that politicians understand their needs, hopes, and aspirations. 

Similar to employees, the difference lies in the mode of obtaining data on what young people think. An average of 85% of government relies on data from schools, family, and friends of young people and contact with their constituents. But, unfortunately, gathering data from these sources does not tell the entire story about young people’s aspirations.

To eliminate the barriers of not understanding young people, employers and those in government could consider expanding their reference frame beyond the environments of young people to establish a closer relationship. This will reveal what can give a deeper understanding of young people’s hopes, needs, and aspirations.

VWEX Could Be Accelerating E-commerce and Helping in Post-Pandemic Recovery

It’s no longer a concept that COVID-19 disrupted livelihoods globally, and some young people may not understand the severity of the impact. The setback means less or no training opportunities and not preparing young professionals for the demands of the labor market.

In the absence of physical work experience opportunities, digital technologies have taken up the role of reducing the effects of COVID. Digital platforms now play the bigger roles in online learning to engage young people in e-commerce, getting the money to cover their bills. 

This remote exposure to virtual learning helps avoid transportation setbacks, following traveling restrictions, and cutting off physical gatherings to ensure social distancing—the new normal.

Virtual work experience is also recognized by the e-commerce market that already understands how young professionals have been limited in learning because of the pandemic. Therefore, they accept CVs that contain experiences from online classes and consider such young professionals fit for the task in the e-commerce sector. Besides, lots of activities are processed virtually as more customers prefer online products and services.
