Dr Claudia Kindler of Valley Chiropractic SF

Part of working with our clients is “understanding” what they do.  Recently, we had the pleasure to chat with Dr Claudia Kindler of Valley Chiropractic SF.  She  was kind enough to walk us though the process and what to expect when we visit a Chiropractor.

How long have you been a Chiropractor?

17 years

When should I see a Chiropractor versus my primary physician?

When you have a musculoskeletal problem that you do not want to treat with medication.

When you have had musculoskeletal symptoms that are temporarily relieved with stretching, massage, exercise or medication but do not have lasting effects.

Is chiropractic safe?

Chiropractic is very safe, reflected by having some of the lowest malpractice insurance rates among doctors and physical therapists.  There are rumors about chiropractors causing strokes or injuring discs but the research and statistics do not support those statements.

What is spinal decompression?

Spinal decompression is a procedure that relieves pressure on spinal nerves and/or spinal discs.  Decompression can be either surgical, microdiscectomy, laminectomy, or non-surgical using traction.

What can I expect on my first visit?

A thorough history of your injury and/or your complaints, a review of your other health history, a neurologic and orthopedic exam.  With this information further testing may be indicated, X-Ray or MRI, and then a treatment plan.  Depending on the circumstances you may or may not be adjusted.

Why does cracking my back make me feel better?

Initially you feel better because there is a relief in pressure where your joints have not been moving properly.  The muscles around the segment(s) that have been adjusted will relax and normalize.  Any time a joint is cavitated, or gapped, there is a release of endorphins into your system.

When should manipulation be avoided?

Manipulation should be avoided when a bone is broken, is cancerous, there is a sequestered disc or pain in the area is so severe a specific adjustment cannot be safely delivered.

Is chiropractic appropriate for children?

Yes, chiropractic is safe and appropriate for children.  Infants have received care for neck, shoulder, low back and hip problems.  Chiropractic can also help with spitting up and colic.  Toddlers have been helped with chiropractic care for falls, ear infections or colds.

Will insurance cover my chiropractic care?

All insurance companies offer chiropractic care as a benefit.  Actual coverage is determined by the individual policy.

What advice can you offer someone who is thinking of becoming a chiropractor?

To always keep the patients best interest in mind.  It is easy to lose focus on what is important with the many hours of schooling and interning.  There are also many stressors when beginning practice, stay focused on what inspired you to go to chiropractic school and provide the best health care that you can.  Being a chiropractor is a fabulous career choice!
