Drop shipping is the most common retail method employed by many retailers globally . This process involves the ordering of products from a retailer and receiving these ordered products from the wholesaler. Basically, this method is considered a more practical way of retailing as this does not involve additional costs on warehousing, as well as on the shipping of the products by the retailer.

The retailer and wholesalers usually collaborate on this process. The retailers advertise and sell the products, typically through online shops; the customers avail of the products and send the amount to be paid plus the shipping fees. It is then the retailer’s job to inform the wholesaler about the customer’s orders and pays for the wholesale prices of these products, giving him a profit, the amount of which depends on the retail prices of the ordered products. The wholesaler, in turn, processes the orders, and ships the products directly to the customer, saving money from the shipping fees especially for bulk orders.

The manufacturers greatly benefit from this method of retailing because they need not advertise their products for the possible consumers; instead, the retailers do this on their part. Indeed, both retailers and wholesalers profit from this retail drop ship methodology , which makes the whole process of advertising, selling and delivering of the goods such an ease to both sides.

Aside from the ease and comfort that drop-shipping entails, the retailers also benefit from this method in such a way that they do not see any reason at all to align to the traditional way of retailing, one which involves inventory. In a retail business, inventory is always the prime requirement to have everything the retailer needs. He needs to have an updated and a large amount of inventory stored in a warehouse or any secure place he chose to stock his retail products. During the course of time, if his inventory is outdated, he must sell his inventory  severely discounted   , which might not possibly give him a profit at all.

By utilizing drop shipping , the retailer can avoid losing large amounts of money brought about by inevitable failures in stocking inventory. Through this method, retailers do need to stock products or even employ people to manage the inventory, thus freeing him from any other costs of the retail business. This method also gives opportunity to a lot of people to engage in the retail business, because even those who sell products through Internet online stores can utilize this retail method.

However, like any other business, retailers who use drop shipping as their retail method can experience some draw backs , as well. If an inventory needs to be current and updated, the products that a retailer sells and provides to the customer through drop shipping must also be updated. This is to avoid any complications in the timely delivery of the ordered products to the customer. If an ordered product is not available or out of stock in the wholesaler’s inventory, then the retailer will have to wait for these products to be available, causing a delay in the scheduled delivery of the products. To avoid this, retailers must either see to it that the products he put up for sale are available in the wholesaler’s inventory, or ask the wholesaler for a day-after-day update on the current inventory level of their products.

Regardless of the possible setbacks and considering all of its benefits, drop shipping is indeed considered the most effective retail method a retailer can utilize.
